New publication makes the case for investing in decent jobs and social protection for just transitions
Geneva - A new publication by the Technical Support Facility of the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions brings together evidence, country experiences and practical lessons on how integrated investments in decent jobs and social protection can help advance just transitions and accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
Building the Case for the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions shows how the Global Accelerator is moving from commitment to action in pathfinder countries, by supporting government-led road maps that bring together employment, social protection, macroeconomic and financing policies. Drawing on interviews with Ministers and key stakeholders of the world of work in Global Accelerator pathfinder countries, the publication describes how each country is using the Global Accelerator model to drive economic reforms and strengthen social development while putting people at the centre. It illustrates how a global initiative can be translated into various implementation pathways that are fully aligned with each country’s development priorities.
Supporting South–South cooperation, the publication provides Global Accelerator pathfinder countries – and those interested in joining the initiative – with evidence of concrete experiences of countries that are currently implementing the initiative.
The publication is divided into two parts, with Part I focusing on the Global Accelerator’s ambition and adaptation by each of the pathfinder countries, along with the global recognition that validates its rationale. Using case studies of examples for integrated approaches from around the world, Part II illustrates how countries are developing integrated policy approaches, mobilizing financing and strengthening cooperation among governments, workers’ and employers’ organizations, civil society, the United Nations, development partners and international financial institutions.
The publication concludes that political will, financing, technical capacity and multi-stakeholder cooperation are essential to turn the ambition of the Global Accelerator into concrete results for people.
